Pantelis E. Zoiopoulos was born in 1945 at Zografou at the outskirts of Athens in Greece. He studied at the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). He won State Scholarship and obtained MSc and PhD degrees at Aberdeen University, Scotland. He studied effects of feeding fibrous feeds to pigs. He measured Nitrogen Balance with lactating sows, chemical composition of weight loss with newly weaned sows using heavy water, and availability of ammino-acids with growing pigs cannulated at ileum. He was elected Professor at University of Ioannina, Greece. He was evaluator of Community research projects. He attended over 500 meetings of Standing Committee on Animal Nutrition in Brussels as head of Hellenic delegation. He chaired the group of experts on this field 10 times at the European Council in Brussels. He was appointed by EU Council in 2003 Porte-parole (spokesman) of the EU at the Assembly meeting of FAO of the UN in GM feeds. He organised the State Feeding stuffs Control Laboratory in 1980 at Athens in view of Greece’s entry into EEC. He worked up tables of composition in nutrients and undesirable substances of feeds produced in Greece. He researched on the utilization of citrus industry by-products in the feeding of lactating dairy sheep. He studied the milk composition of Epirus mountain sheep breed and the results of supporting by technical intervention the dairy sheep small-holders of Crete in extensive or semi-intensive systems. He also published critical reviews on EU legislation on undesirable substances and organic livestock farming. He published 280 papers – 200 of them in Greek periodicals and 80 in international ones, most of them in SCI journals. One of his books on food crises by Nova Science Publ. was registered in Congress Library Catalogue. He has about 2500 citations – 1000 in SCI journals, 1000 more in books or conferences proceedings and 500 in Greek magazines. In 2023 he was awarded a DSc degree by AUA for his contribution to Science and service to his country.
